How to See What your Client Sees on Google

One of the more frustrating, common issues we have in Local Search is when you’re on the phone with a client, searching the same keyword and seeing completely different things. There are 2 things I’ve found that make the biggest influence on what search results you see.

The first is a user’s location. Most people know this and the tool I’ve found easiest to use for this is this amazing one. Unlike the Ad Preview Tool or other methods I’ve tried, you can actually click around and continue to search because it takes you straight to Google.

The second is personalization. I commonly hear people using Chrome’s Incognito search to help fix this. Incognito mode does not get rid of personalization. I asked one of the Chrome Top Contributors for more clarification and they said:

“the more work, searches, etc. you do in Incognito mode, the more data, location, and tracking info you are creating for that Incognito session.”

I recently had a conversation with a client who was using Incognito mode and saw something totally different than me. I sent told him to add &pws=0 to the end of his URL and all of a sudden we were seeing the same results.

In summary, by using that tool and adding &pws=0 to your URL string, you stand the best chance at seeing something more similar to what the client sees. It will also give you a URL that you could email to him/her to click on so that what you see matches.

This is a great, quick solution to solving the common mismatched SERP problem. We have a couple of examples of incognito not being 100% bias proof and getting some clients in that browser can be time consuming.

Great tip, I always had a nagging doubt about incognito mode but never got around to finding out more, but now we know!

btw, I think you mean &pws=0 not &pw=0

I've tried using the emulator in chrome dev tools before. They will allow you to set the lat/long, but i'm not sure if that would take care of personalization. Nice find Joy!

I feel kinda dumb for not knowing that one, since Dr. Pete wrote about it years ago - https://moz.com/blog/face-off-4-ways...onalize-google

I found that by searching what that parameter actually is... clearly Moz is on top of this stuff lol

It looks like BrightLocal has come up with a new tool to address this problem:
    https://www.brightlocal.com/local-se...sults-checker/

I haven't tested it yet with clients, but plan to soon!
