Exclamation New Google Local Option - Switch Place Page Over to a G+ Brand Page

OK so there is no name for this new feature, so that title was a little rough. Just realized, when you read that title, you could take it a couple different ways, so first let me try to explain what situation this new feature applies to. Then I won't even try tell you how to do it. I had a demo yesterday, but it's hard to explain, so will link to the official Google docs.

    WHAT DOES IT DO?

This option allows you to DISCONNECT your Place page (reviews & ability to rank on search/maps) from the existing Local G+ social page... and move all the Local stuff over to the G+ Brand page (or other NON Local G+ page) you have, that you may have already built engagement on.

WHAT SCENARIO IS THIS USEFUL FOR?

If you or a client, created a G+ Brand page (or other NON local page) and built up a following, back before anyone knew that all Place pages would be upgraded to G+ social... then after the upgrade you ended up with 2 G+ pages. 1) The Brand page with all your posts, circles, followers. 2) The G+ Local page that shows in search/maps and has reviews - then also morphed into a G+ social page. But it's an empty social page and you don't want to start over building up social from scratch.

So your social following was on the Brand page, but all the Local stuff including reviews was on the other page. And there was not much you could do about it except TRY to get all your followers from the brand page to move to your G+ Local upgraded social page. Getting followers to move is tricky. OR you could post updates to both pages, which is time consuming and not ideal either.

The other situation this can be helpful for, is clients who mistakenly set up a G+ page in the wrong category and did not set it up as a Local page. Then later found out (after building a following) they did wrong and there was no way to change it to a Local G+ page.

    WHEN IS IT LIVE?
I'm already seeing it in my G+ dash now - checking to see if rolling out gradually or already live for all.

WHERE DO I FIND IT? WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?
The help doc below explains in detail how how to do it, but essentially it's at the bottom of your G+ Local page settings (in G+ dash). Here is a screenshot of mine.

Have any clients this will be helpful for?

    Any questions???

    This is a huge announcement.

I would say that maybe 20% of the inquiries posted from business owners in the Google and Your Business Forum could benefit from this feature? Would you say that's accurate Linda? Maybe more?

Agreed Colan. While I don't have any clients in this scenario (most actually listened to my advice ), this is huge.

Can't wait to see/hear more about this or if this will completely roll out some time soon.

I'm pretty sure it's already rolled out but don't remember for sure from yesterday's Hangout meeting with Google. I've asked Jade for confirmation so will let you know.

It doesn't come up here that often, but you are right Colan and the Google forum it comes up quite often from business owners that don't understand the different kinds of pages or even know what type of page they have.

Re: New Google Local Option - Switch Place Page Over to a G+ Brand Page

The digital marketing company I work for has been wanting to transition from our Google+ Local page to Google+ Brand page, but we have been been hesitant to do so because we don't wan to lose our branded url, our following, and reviews.

If we created a new G+ Brand page for our company and then connected our old G+ Local page to it, all of our followers, reviews, map, and url will transfer over to the new brand page?

Re: New Google Local Option - Switch Place Page Over to a G+ Brand Page

No Joe, if I'm understanding you right, this is not what you want to do and I don't even think what you are describing is what you want to do.

You'd never want to turn a G+ Local page into a new pure brand page. Can't see any benefit to that.

This would only be if you had an EXISTING brand page that already had followers ect and your reviews were on the G+ Local page and you wanted everything combined into 1.

The followers that you end up with - are the followers from the Brand page.
Followers on the G+ L page don't move over. Only the reviews and local info does.

The G+ L followers stay on the OLD G+ L page which would then be kinda useless because it would not have reviews or rank, would just be sort of a left over remnant G+ page.
