Did everyone see the new Google Home with the Screen?

The google home's have not been very practical for me, granted I don't have ANYTHING smart in my home. I'm sure if I had a nest, smart lock or smart coffee maker it'd be much cooler.

Regardless, the new Google Home that came out, I don't know why, but I WANT! haha

I'm trying to figure out what I would use the screen for. I have 2 Google Homes in my house and use them a lot for things like playing music on Spotify, turning lights on and off and adjusting the thermostat. I think the only thing I'd use on the screen is recipes. Anything else, I'd rather use a computer.

I have resisted the urge to purchase any of the voice assistants so far. For what it's worth, I can see a use for the screen in a couple of ways, though.

As a screen for video chats with family
As a screen for illustrations in answers to "how to" questions
As a screen for video to accompany news updates

Now, all I need is for Google, Amazon and Apple to each give me one of their units so that I can speak about them with authority(!) ;)

At this point the main benefit I can see is if you Airbnb your home and you are at work and want to see if your guests are at the door, but other than that, I struggle to find a strong way to use these devices.

I'm planning to pick up some sort of Google smart display device around Black Friday. Our main use cases are recipes and seeing who is playing on Spotify (I use it a lot for music discovery). But since we live in Google's ecosystem, it may prove to be a more useful device than our Echo.

This is what I think of when I consider buying these devices.

I do need to get one though... the nature of the work demands that I start understanding them since they are becoming so common now.

Having a screen could be very useful in a lot of ways, I think. I'm not sure it's worth the cost though for many people. Looking at the home hub, it doesn't seem to be more than a smart display for your already installed Google home, but with a few more features. It seems like it does the same things a tablet would do, but with integration into Google Home. Unless I'm looking at the wrong device?

I suppose it could be useful for folks who prefer a more tactile approach to controlling their home device? It also might be nice for pulling up recipes, as Joy said... but personally my smartphone does that.

My Echo convinced me that all the hype about voice search taking over was overblown, at least in terms of local SEO. I can see how adding a display will make that very different... Ok Google, find me a plumber. I would never do that with a voice only device, but with a screen, absolutely.

I have pre-ordered, at $150 it's almost a no brainer BUT as @RichOwings said there may be a few Black Friday deals to have so I might cancel and impatiently wait until then.

I see it as "the next step", add a screen to voice search and now you can advertise more...Google Home's are great but on screen you can show more adverts rather than just giving one vocalized advert (which no one remembers).

From a very quick test I did last week, I got different answers on the Lenovo Smart Display (with Google Assistant) than I did with voice search so this is where I'm interested to drill into more.

I also want to see what GMB looks like for clients, what features standout more, etc

As always I'll keep you posted...but it might have to be after Black Friday
