Re: Building Reviews for Local Search Success - Free InsideLocal Webinar

Great job by all, thank you for your time. Linda, I was not familiar with how the chatbox worked and didn't realize you were in front of the firing range...lol you did well though. A few questions I had in addition to what was covered...

Is there a workaround for displaying reviews on your website from Yelp, Google? It's hard enough to get reviews sometimes no less asking a customer to leave reviews in multiple places. I have been looking into widgets to allow visitors to post and publish reviews on the actual site as well.

What have people found to be the best methods to combat a negative review? Any solutions for turning a negative review into a positive review? Monetary solution? % off next visit? Partial or full refund? Additional methods for handling negative reviews and reputation management - taking discussion offline? Push negative reviews down with positive reviews? I know this walks a fine line with soliciting reviews but I'm not looking for it to be manipulative. Just trying to understand the past experience of others.

Has anyone experimented with how many websites to offer a past client to leave reviews at? Say offer 5 sites to leave reviews vs offering 2 or 3, etc? I don't want to inundate a customer but I want to give them options for which they may feel more comfortable.

There is a chat box and then there is also the QA module. That's where I was so busy.
Did you find the Q module too? That's where all the action was.

I'm tied up now but I think maybe Phil is going to be peeking in. He'll answer or I'll try to answer later tonight. Or Colan and others feel free to jump in.

Thanks for asking some great Qs Luke!

Re: Building Reviews for Local Search Success - Free InsideLocal Webinar

    Good questions, Luke.

On the webinar we briefly covered the question of embedding Google reviews, and the dos and don'ts of that. The long and short of is you're not supposed to embed Google reviews and (I believe) Yelp reviews on your site. A lot of people do it anyway and seem to get away with it - as in not have their reviews filtered - but who knows if that will last. My suggestion would be not to embed reviews on your site. But if you feel you must, probably the best thing to do is just take a screenshot of your reviews and feature them as images on your site. Or maybe just grab one sentence - a tiny excerpt - and put that on your site.

As for the 2nd question, it all just depends. How to deal with a negative review depends on what is the issue is that prompted the bad review in the first place, it depends on whether your customer is reasonable or an impossible-to-please type, and it depends on whether you can post a response. No matter what, you should be getting enough reviews from happier customers that an ugly one here or there doesn't stand out like a sore thumb. But, again, how to handle it beyond that just depends on a ton of variables.

Video is live. Just added it to the 1st post above.

If you missed the event, catch all the knowledge that was shared via the replay.

Plus I know many that were at the live event will want to watch the video again because there was so much important info flying around that it was tough to catch it all.

    Enjoy!

PS thanks to Myles and the BrightLocal team for editing the video & for making these webinars possible!

Re: Building Reviews for Local Search Success - Free InsideLocal Webinar

First, a huge thanks and we're-not-worthy bow to Phil, Don, Myles and Linda. This session was epic. I had to duck out of the live one for a call about halfway through and it *killed* me--so happy to see this video!

I wanted to pick up on Luke's third question, which I think is really interesting and subtle, and it extends one of the points in Phil's presentation: You want to give potential reviewers some choice with respect to the review channels you care about, but how much choice?

I spend a lot of time thinking about what turns customers into reviewers, and we know empirically that giving choices increases conversions, especially when you can introduce choices that potential reviewers find compelling, like a review site that lets you login with Facebook and leave a review without creating an account.

In terms of the number of choices, we encourage our clients to limit it to 4-6. Why? 3 probably doesn't cast the net wide enough. But more than 6? Decision paralysis. There is some really interesting research on this phenomenon, like this paper from a Columbia-Standford team: http://www.columbia.edu/%7Ess957/art...motivating.pdf The goal is to make reviewing easier, and choices help. But there's a tipping point where too many choices will actually make the task *harder*.

    @Jon

Good call on the 4-6 -site "window." That matches my experience, FWIW.

In other news: your Wayne's World allusion made my day.
