Open Table Reservations in Google Places for Restaurants

Just now seeing integration between Google Places listing for restaurants and making an open table reservation right on the places page. Does anyone know if the restaurant places analytics reports on this interaction? Or is it being reported by Open Table?

Re: Open Table Reservations in Google Places for Restaurants

Very good question. I don't have any restaurant clients.

But I looked at 20 restaurants in my town off a search. Off the carousel it was interesting:

Only 4 google + pages were showing from the home page. Of the 20 only a few were claimed and only one had been updated recently since the merger of google+ and places.

We own operated certain businesses. We get very little traffic into our google+ page. They aren't restaurants. We don't use OT.

OT separately reports to restaurants with regard to reservations. There were two big categories: reservations off the OT site and reservations off the restaurant's site. OT would bill less for reservations off the restaurant's site.

Yelp, google and possibly other 3rd party sites are carrying OT reservation options. I would assume OT is paying a 3rd party site to carry that info.

With so few restaurants having claimed their sites...do restaurant operators care about this info????

Thanks for sharing SEOonWheels, we really appreciate it.

I don't deal with restaurants so don't pay that much attention to this vertical. (Should I know, just don't.)

I remember seeing complaints at the Google forum, either folks WANTING the OT widget and wanted to know how to get it OR they DIDN'T want it, because they wanted people going direct to their own site to book. Here are some posts at the G forum if you want to investigate. They seemed to start back around May but maybe back then it was a different option or they were just starting to test.

I think I'd be a little upset if I owned a restaurant. What if I want people coming to my site instead of going through OT where I have to pay a fee? But alas again the G+L page is not theirs, it's Google's.

Looks like OT is working with Google on a couple things: Google | OpenTable Blog

Thanks for sharing insight! Reading more about open table it looked as though it started with a robust restaurant management software and now with Google's incorporation of the widget is trying to circumvent a restaurant website entirely.
Whats also interesting is that open table will reportedly create a free mobile site for a restaurant via duda mobile. So even if you're upset about your website being bypasses they could just say "hey, it's free! Don't worry about your site, we're getting you reservations. Pay us more."
Conspiracy theory aside - there have been so many "in google" additions this year, keeps us paying attention to their acquisitions an on our toes.
Next point of research - hotel local optimization...and their websites...

Re: Open Table Reservations in Google Places for Restaurants

If a customer books a reservation through the OT site the restaurant operator w/ an OT contract pays $1/reservation to OT. If the customer books the OT reservation through the operators site the operator pays OT $0.25/reservation.

If a customer books directly through OT it qualifies for OT points. Accumulate enough pts and you get cash from OT. No points if you book off the restaurant's site.

If you book a reservation through Yelp or Google or any other 3rd party source I don't know the arrangements or if a customer gets those valuable points. Its worth knowing.

I have very visable google + pages on our smbs and very little traffic to those pages.

As I further reviewed up to 30 restaurants in our region I saw very few google + pages on the link to the restaurant. Not easy to get to.

I have strong doubts about google + pages getting a lot of traffic. If I really wanted to use a google feature as a restaurant and especially if its a great looking restaurant I'd contact one of the photographers they have authorized to create Google 360 degree pictures of the restaurants. Those are dynamite and very vivid.
I've gone to restaurants based on that dynamite 360 degree view.

Does anyone know how to integrate a "Make a Reservation" feature through a Google+ local page?

I have a bed and breakfast client who is interested in being able to make reservations via their Google+ Local page. I noticed this business has it integrated.

Do we have to have a OpenTable account?
