Local Ranking Factors - Expert Debate & Panel Discussion

With recent updates to the display of Google’s local results & the algorithm which drives them, how does this alter the influence of certain local ranking factors -

    • Does it put more power on pure local signals like reviews & citations?

    • Does it downplay the impact of traditional, organic signals like links & website authority?

    • Why is Google making these changes and are they short term trials or long term shifts?

Local Search Rank Factors Debate - webinarWe will be joined by 4 leading experts in local search. Each of our speakers is a contributor to the Local Search Ranking Factors Survey and each has their finger firmly on on the pulse of local search industry. We’ve asked them to share their unique insights & observations on the recent changes in Google results and why certain ranking factors have more impact than others.

We also also ask them to peer into their crystal balls and predict what the future holds for ranking well in 2014.

    Agenda:

    1. Understanding Recent Display & Algo Changes
    2. Debate & Compare Most Important Ranking Signals

This would be SOME webinar! I registered, but sadly - it starts at 6am my time (still better than 4-5am, though). I will have to be a real early bird!

Local content updates or status update was mentioned more than once. Does this mean posting updates on the clients website or on the Plus page?

If you were referring to the clients website is this a static page and you just add updates to it or is it a blog page type?

    Thanks.

Whew! What a great event, great content from the speakers and great interaction from the crowd. Wow, just one of the best yet.

Huge thanks to all the speakers, to Colan for helping me in QA and to Myles for playing such a great host as always!

I'll post links to slides when I can and video once edited which can take a couple days.

Re Qs that get posted here...

I need to recover for a bit and eat. Then will try to get answers or alert speakers to answer Qs re to their specific part of presentation. I could not listen to most because I was too busy in Q & A, so will need to get them to reply when you ask "what did they mean by X, Y Z?" or "what was that resource he mentioned?"

re: Video is Live - Local Ranking Factors: Expert Debate & Panel Discussion

first off, great webinar, thank you to you and the team for taking time out of your busy day to educate us .

    I have two questions:

1). how come local search results for local (7 Pack) page 1 of maps and serp yield similar yet different results? IE we have a client ranking F on page 1 of Maps but not ranking in the 7 pack in the serp.

Example: Criminal Justice Attorney Fort Lauderdale - company: Friedland & Bocksch
    https://www.google.com/search?q=crim...sm=91&ie=UTF-8

2). We’ve heard rumor that Google will be conducting spot checks of businesses whose listing are in executive suites and may be virtual offices, is this true and if it is how will they differentiate a business who is really there full time vs one that is there part time. IE a law office who has a satellite office that is in compliance with the state bar ethics?

    Thank you,

    Andy

    Hi Atchie,

It's on the website, not the Plus page. Most clients should have some kind of content management system to update their pages (wordpress is common). If it's a static site, well, empowering the client to be able to add content by converting it to a CMS driven site is probably a worthwhile investment.

Slightly different algos. I think when it blends in main SERPS the organic factors can play more of a part.

Lawyers are very problematic in this regard and Google knows lots of them set up executive suites or virtual offices they in reality are never at. So I believe attys are in the cross hair and I've seen MANY that had all their locations deleted or entire account suspended.

They have various ways they can flush out whether the location is valid or not. But they (and I) are not going to share it because then the bad guys just try to figure out ways to get around it.

Every atty I consult with who is using virtual offices I just tell them it's a violation and they need to fix it or risk potentially losing everything. But it's like drinking and driving. You may get away with it for awhile, but if you get caught it can make your life miserable for months and take time to recover from.

For example: if the whole account gets suspended, how much business will you lose while you are down? How long will it take and how much will it cost to pay someone to rebuild? And will you regain your ranking and get back all your hard earned reviews on your primary legit listing? All those question marks in my mind are not worth the risk. Knowing everything I know, I sure would not try to skate and cross fingers I didn't get caught.

Is every atty with a virtual office going to get caught? No.
Just like some drunk drivers get away with it.

But just like drunk drivers - businesses that break the location rules are in the cross hairs.

LOL did I pound the drunk driving analogy home hard enough???
