Arrow BrightLocal's SMB Internet Marketing Survey 2013 is Out

BrightLocal published extensive survey results you'll want to head over to read.

SMB Internet Marketing Survey 2013 | Local Search Survey Results

Here are the questions that were covered

    SMB Questions

    1. How much money do you allocate to marketing your business each month?
    2. What percentage of your marketing money do you spend on internet or mobile marketing?
    3. In the next 12 months do you plan to increase the money you spend on internet marketing?
    4. Which of the following marketing channels are most effective at bringing you new leads & customers?
    5. How effective is internet marketing at attracting customers to your business?
    6. Do you have a mobile ready / mobile optimized website?
    7. Do you think mobile & mobile marketing is important for the future of your business?

    Marketing Consultants & Agencies

    8. Do you handle internet marketing yourself or use a freelance marketing consultant/agency?
    9. How do you rate the performance of your marketing consultant/agency?
    10. How many times per week are you emailed/called by an internet marketing or SEO company wanting to sell you their services?
    11. Which of these statements best applies to your attitude towards internet marketing?
    12. If you use/were to use an internet marketing consultant which of these factors are most important to you?
    13. Which of these statements best applies to your feelings about Google Places/Google Local?

I want to quote the summary from that last question:

    Key Findings:

40% say it is clear and easy to use
22% know it is important but do not understand it
9% do not think Google understands small businesses
7% do not believe it is important themselves
14% find it frustrating due to constant changes

    Analysis:

This subject is a clear divider of opinions. Perhaps due to a perceived lack of communication from Google on the subject or the constant changes being made to the service. When we collate the positive responses with those which are more negative we can see from the chart above that there is generally a negative feeling on the subject. Perhaps this underlines the fact that small & medium businesses need more assistance or information on the subject of Local SEO.

In turn, this does represent a good opportunity for search agencies & consultants. It gives them the chance to pitch for management of Google Places & other Local SEO services leaving the client free to focus on running their own business.
I would suggest that the 40% that say it's clear and easy, don't use it enough to know it's clear and easy. If you set it and forgot about it 2 years ago, then yes it seems easy.

But I agree with Myles, the degree of difficulty and confusion does present more opportunity for consultants who connect with business owners that realize they need help managing their local presence.

Re: BrightLocal's SMB Internet Marketing Survey 2013 is Out

Some interesting facts and figures in this survey. The opportunity for us with G+/Places is in educating small biz owners how effective it can be. I don't have the link to hand but the recent study done by Sim Partners (I think) showed the benefits pretty comprehensively.

The other point in the survey was #10 and the bombardment that SMB's are under when it comes to cold calls and unsolicited emails from "search" agencies. I wonder how much these are referring to the general SEO services emails we all get from overseas and how many of them are from real, credible search agencies.

I bet a lot of the calls they get are from the questionable or outright spammy and pushy big robo caller agencies. The types that have been outed here and at Mike's that have thousands of clients and robo call relentlessly.

Credible search agencies don't cold call and have better ways of prospecting.

Seriously though, if you have to resort to cold calling, you'll be perceived as "one of those guys"! So you'll often get hung up on before you start. And if they let you talk they'll expect your price to be as cheap as the spammy promise-the-moon for $200 guys.
