Merging Because of a Mysterious Map Maker Duplicate?

I have a client who shares building space with another business. The name and phone number of this other business keep merging with my clients listing.

I noticed that this other business has a listing in Map Maker that is marked as a duplicate of my clients listing on Map Maker

I checked the history and don't see when this duplicate marking occurred.

My theory is that this is causing or at least contributing to the merging in Google Places.

Am I on to something here?

Is there a way to remove a duplicate tag from a listing in Map Maker that is incorrectly marked as a duplicate?

Great question I bet our expert mappers Andrew or Gregg can answer.
They usually stop by in the evening to answer Qs and I'm sure will see this one.

It depends on what initiated the marking of a duplicate and when it happened. There are essentially 3 types of ways a duplicate is created of point features in Map Maker.

    1. User initiated deletion/duplicate where the other feature is selected from the suggested list of possible duplicates (typically show in history)
    2. User initiated deletion/duplicate where the other feature isn't found but that feature is marked as a duplicate (always show in history)
    3. Bot initiated duplication (typically doesn't show if its a Places-side merger)

Number 3 is a nightmare because sometimes the "bad" GMM feature is linked with the claimed G+L and/or Places page (not sure if this is just for G+L pages and/or for Places pages). This can cause GMM & Places to be out of sync because the "good" GMM feature isn't linked to an active G+L and/or Places page. (Not sure if this is the issue you have). Essentially you loose control of the feature in Maps because things got swapped by the bot. This can only be undone by Places support. I usually use the Report a Problem in Maps, MapMaker and on the Places page (if one still exists) with a detailed explanation of what the good GMM feature is, the bad GMM (features) and the URL for anything connected with the problem. If I can see the edit in GMM then I Report the Edit as Spam/Abuse for "Wrong Information." Which works to stop bots from making the same edit again in the future.

Sometime the issue is that someone claims a feature that at some point in the past was that other business's feature. When a feature is hijacked the bots don't respect the new information as it often treats the feature as the original feature. You will want to go back through the GMM history all the way to the beginning to see if that is the case for your situation. Untangling something like that usually involves reverting the feature back to what it was before and creating a new feature for the business/business that hijacked the feature. This often will happen with professional listings being hijacked by the main office that they're working at or by a colleague. I typically just mark all the changes in the Edit History that I see are bad (name changes, hijacking, etc.) as Spam/Abuse and report the feature in MapMaker and Maps and let Support handle it if it involves a business. Otherwise I just put things back the way they should be. Hopefully I've answered your question.

Andrew, you could start a side business doing training.

Folks here are lined up just waiting for it.
    Credit cards in hand.

I have to sit down and develop materials for a Map Maker for Businesses training. But if anyone ever wants some general/specific training and/or troubleshooting in GMM drop me a PM. PayPal works for me
