Rand Fishkin Talks Co-Occurrence...Local SEOs will relate to this

    Hi Everybody,
You may already have seen this on last week's Whiteboard Friday at SEOmoz, but I had missed it until today and thought I would share here, as Rand is talking about a phenomenon in general, organic search which I believe everyone here in Local SEO will find ringing a little bell.

Prediction: Anchor Text is Weakening...And May Be Replaced by Co-Occurrence- Whiteboard Friday | SEOmoz

The classic ranking signals: links, authority, keywords, and anchor text - have long remained dominant in Google's search rankings. But in the past few years, we've seen the rise of citations for local rankings, and now, we may be seeing more co-occurence of terms and links in search queries, in text content, and in links becoming more of a factor.
I think 'co-occurrence' is a great term for describing the phenomenon/trust created by multiple matching citations, and I find it highly interesting that Rand is predicting that all of SEO may go this way. Thought members here would find this of interest!

David Mihm has an interesting article about why citations are the new backlinks for local SEO.

    Here is the link:

Local vs Traditional SEO: Why Citation Is the New Link | Mihmorandum

The reason why Google choose to use Citations as Backlinks is very simple.

For building accurate Local Rankings, the number of back-links from other Local Pages is to low and they had to find other ways to check the Local Authority Level for a specific URL.

    Citations provides all info needed:

    - Name - instead of the anchor-text
    - Address - for specifying the impact area
    - Phone Number - for easy matching purposes

NAP - seems a perfect and it can be found on many Websites with a high Local Authority Level ( Local Directories - Yelp etc )
