Can a Map Maker "poke" JumpStart a New Listing?

I've noticed something interesting with new business listings on Map Maker. They always start out with no history which makes sense. However, earlier this week I was looking at a Map Maker listing that had been there since June but there was still no history.

What was really interesting was that once I made an edit to the Map Maker listing it started to generate history. It not only displayed the edit I just made but it also generated another edit that looked like this:

    Description

So, it's as if this edit "poked" the MM listing to start generating history.

I'm wondering if this can help push new listings into the places index faster??

    What do you guys think?

Not sure about that Colan. BUT I've been noticing listings for folks I've helped in the G forum that are DISPLAYING as if they are brand new. They don't have the related places section on the live page and don't have any MM history yet. So I ASSUME they are brand new and tell the user that's why they aren't ranking yet, only to be told they verified back in June or something. SO they should be ranking and have MM history. So seems like there is something not jiving or a delay sometimes.

But your MM poke trick may be worth a try for those brave enough to touch MM.

This is normal. It's not a kickstart or anything; it just had yet to import into Map Maker. When you are searching in Map Maker, you can see the items in both the Map Maker and Places database, not just the Map Maker database. If you select an item that is in Places but has yet to have it's turn in the queue for importing into Map Maker; when you select edit it causes the bot to immediately import it so that you can do an edit. It will appear in your history with all the elements that were imported, and in fact if you do the edit you will now see it twice in your history; once for the import and once for the edit.

If you exit out of the edit screen, it will still have been imported and show that part of the history.

There are hundreds of factors that influence ranking in Google Places, but I have definitely seen a listing or two jump in the local rankings after doing a null edit in Map Maker and generating that first bit of history.

In your opinion, is it possible that that there is ANY correlation between doing this on Map Maker and having the places page be influenced(whether it be ranking or something else)?

In my opinion, there is no correlation But the one thing that could be happening is that the pulling of info into Map Maker causes Places to look at it again; in other words it creates a null edit in Places. So if it truly does anything, I would think that it is via the Places null edit "function", which would mean that you could do the same thing via Places.

Are you suggesting that an edit in the Google Places dash (null or not) would cause the Map Maker history to start generating?

I would have to disagree, based on my observations, if that's what you are saying. For example, the listing for Jim Brown had several edits in Google Places and still no Map Maker history until I edited it in Map Maker directly.

Re: Can a Map Maker "poke" JumpStart a New Listing?

No, that's not what I meant to imply. For a listing that begins life in Place, the Map Maker history begins upon the first import into Map Maker. The import happens either during regular imports, or if someone clicks the Edit button in Map Maker before the regular import occurs.

I meant to imply that perhaps when the second method is done, the request by the import bot for the information from the Places database equals a null edit within Places.
