    Post What Matt Cutts Says about Local Search | LocalVisibilitySystem.com

    Matt Cutts doesn’t talk much about local search. Nor do we local-search obsessives pester him to do so.

    But Phil, if Cutts doesn’t talk about local search, why are you even bringing him up? Especially when the people in charge of Google Plus, umm…Google Places, uh…that Google local thing usually tell us what they recommend business owners do?

    Well, Gentle Reader, I bring up Cutts because occasionally he does say something relevant to Google’s local search results – and to the question of how to rank well there.

    Great advice! I found the links to Matt Cutt's personal site are from 2010ish, butI think they still hold true today. Some take-aways I found:
    • You simply cannot enter Local SERPs unless your actually located there, or are a mobile SAB with a base of operations that is within the 50-mile radius
    • Use your name and address on every page of your site
    • Use text for everything; videos & flash are great for endusers (not for search engines)
    • Have locations for business on their own page, except if there are multiple locations for a city and then all within that city should be on that page
    • business locations should be logically organized and linked to from the website
    • Don't use cookie-cutter sites, it can look spammy (I assume he's talking about the same template for different businesses in the same business sphere)

    Good, solid advice from Mr. Cutts, per usual. Nice post on Phil's part.

    Over the years, people have said all kinds of negative things about Matt, but they pretty much boil down to people being frustrated when they aren't doing as well in the SERPs as they think they should and Matt being an easy target because of his public position. We all know Google has problems (and Local may have the lion's share of them) but I've always listened closely to anything Matt says. He's good at explaining things and is a doorway to the 'mind' of Google.

    @Linda
    Thanks for the posting

    @Andrew
    Awesome summary – thanks! I believe that 2nd video is from 2007 (!) – old info but still valid, as you say.

    @Miriam
    Well said!
