Sudden Spike in Referral Visits from Semalt.com

Is anyone else noticing a sudden appearance or spike in visits from semalt.com in their client's google analytics? It is a bot that spiders websites...read more here What is SEMALT and how do I block it from visiting my site?

I hadn't noticed it until the last month or two and now i notice the visits increasing. Was wondering if it is something i'm doing that is causing this (for instance visiting yext.com too many times to check directory listings on current or potential clients) or if anyone else is noticing this too.

    Thanks!

    Hi Shonda,

I'm in a private Local Search Mastermind group and someone there today just mentioned the same thing. So it must be something new.

Thanks for the link, I'll pass it on.

    Hi Shonda

I saw this yesterday too - on a site that barely gets any traffic (2 to 3 visits a day)... had 2 referrals from it. Seems to be some new tool to analyse websites

Re: Sudden Spike in Referral Visits from Semalt.com

All of my clients sites were being bombarded by this "new" crawler. My developer tried to figure out a way to block it but to no avail. Luckily, one of my clients likes to roll up his sleeves when it comes to this stuff and he discovered a fix. Just go to this site and enter your web address. I did for all of my clients and it worked as advertised. Our sites are no longer being crawled by Semalt.

Re: Sudden Spike in Referral Visits from Semalt.com

Mainly because on small websites it can be a top referrer but in the end doesn't mean anything. "Ya, Mr. Business owner, Semalt is the #1 referrer but it's just a web crawler so ignore it." Which then leads to a whole unnecessary conversation explaining what Semalt is, what it does, etc.

Second, I believe (and I could be wrong) that it could negatively impact your bounce rate. Since this crawler has a 100% bounce rate every time it hits your site, it can increase your overall bounce rate. Am I right on that...or am I wrong?

In the end, it's a crawler that is unnecessary so if you can block it, you might as well. If nothing else, it just muddies up the analytics.

Re: Sudden Spike in Referral Visits from Semalt.com

I noticed this sudden spike on my site back in January in my Wordpress stats - I think it is run by a Russian so they probably targeted Europeans first.

I followed the links to see what the crack was and signed up for a free trial account with Semalt.

I had to put in some keywords and it then sent me regular emails to tell me whether my site was going up or down in the rankings for that keyword

They later sent me an email saying that my trial period for using the Semalt service had expired.

I didn't, but they still keep sending me the emails... Not seeing any visits from Semalt in my Wordpress stats now

My feeling was that they sent the bot across to try to get attention and get you to go over and check them out...

Yes they are hitting my site hard too. Maybe have been for awhile but just never noticed until now.

Agreed. Thus Semalt is just annoying and terribly skewd our data. We have seen semalt on almost every one of our clients refferal lists.
