    No History in Map Maker

I keep finding listings in MM with no history. Often it is someone complaining that their 6 month old listing is not showing in category searches. Or it was taken down due to a violation and they've finally gotten it re-instated.

When I look it up in MM, it's published but there is no History.

If you edit and save or cancel, Places Data copier updates the history immediately with a note that this is entry is newly added.

It's as if the listing was removed and re-added, but the local databases are not syncing properly.

Any ideas what the deal is?

Re: No History in Map Maker

    Keenan,

I've been seeing the same thing A LOT and have been frustrated and wondering as well. Often it comes up in the G forum when someone says their ranking dropped and I look and there are no similar places on the listing. Then I go to MM and there is no history. So ya same thing. I say it looks like for some reason this listing started over in the ranking cycle and is acing like a new listing.

RELATED STORY that could shed light.

Someone at Google who shall remain nameless helped me with a dupe this week.
The main listing was ranking #1. The dupe stole 2 reviews.

I explicitly explained the dupe had 2 reviews so asked them to merge the dupe INTO the verified listing.

An hour later the person said all done. I was kinda amazed because I thought it took weeks to merge usually but they were able to do an instant merge.

Only problem was the merge went BACKWARDS. The verified MAIN listing that was ranking #1 and had all the history was merged INTO the unclaimed dupe - instead of vice versa.

So now the main listing DROPPED totally out of the ranking. Is still #1 organic but not in blended. And displays just like what we are talking about. No similar places, no history. Looks like a new listing.

So in this case it was a dupe merge that made the listing start over.

The scraper is so out of control and there are many more dupes and merges happening all the time on the back end that I don't think we even see - that I suspect this is a big part of what's up with all these mature listings that appear to be starting over in the cycle.

Does that potentially make sense to you???

BTW looking at any of it my situation MM history you would not even know any of the story above. MM tells a totally diff story and does not even add up at all with what happened in reality.

    So go figure.

BTW I have not even gotten up the nerve yet to explain to the client what happened so he does not know he dropped. Need to do that today.

Re: No History in Map Maker

    I'm sorry, that sucks.

You should ask for your money back from that unnamed Googler.

I noticed that once the MM listing is "poked" the and the Places Data Copier starts a history, the bots like AIS4 begin to make updates in the history.

It's been going on for a few months. When Gregg first noticed this, he thought that Google might have deleted a ton of listings, only to have them added back in.

It's one of the first things I look for now, especially for newly verified listings that are not showing up in category searches.

This is one of the first things I check now as well. It's difficult (nearly impossible) to establish causation, but I have noticed a slight increase in ranking for a few places listings after I made an initial edit on Map Maker to start generating history.

No somehow it was in the citations section initially, but no worries at all. If I move a post I just think it's polite to let someone know why I edited their post, but not a biggie at all.

Yes, I think it's quite possible there is just a lot more going on behind the scenes.

Nothing in MM makes any sense to me. The help section is not helpful at all, it's worse than Places.

So glad to hear I'm not alone. MM leaves me feeling totally retarded. I don't think I'm a dumb person, but it just makes no sense and I always think it must just be me.

Re: No History in Map Maker

I've been puzzled by the No History features and figured they were Verified/Claimed features that had issues on the Places side and were not accessible via MM (except for the viewing of the feature). SAB are supposed to show in a similar way with a circle marker indicating its an approximate location feature. I'll have to do more investiagtion but I suspect the No History features are corrupt in some way.

Merging features is a tricky thing that can easily be screwed up by bots. So even if the Googler had done it right when everything settled it can flip or do other nasty things. Undoing that sort of thing I don't have the ability, knowlege of how to do it. About all anyone can do on GMM is undo user marked duplicates. However if they get merged on the Places side then even if you undo the GMM features the Places features need to be manually fixed. Hopefully I didn't make everyone's heads spin.

Re: No History in Map Maker

    Thanks Andrew -

Is it really possible that Places listings simply are not syncing correctly between MM and the local databases or is just "stuck."

I don't know if poking the MM entry really works to push the listing back through the system as it may take many weeks to see the result, but I still like doing it.

OK so today he's back ranking #1 again. Even though the listing still has a new URL and CID (that used to belong to the dupe) and even though similar places is missing and even though it's missing in MM. Doesn't a Place page need a corresponding MM record???

Anyway color me puzzled and bamboozled by Google, but happy it's ranking #1 again!
