Error while looking up this feature, please try again

    Hi guys

Just searching for my business in the UK on mapmaker and found when trying to edit it I get the 'Error while looking up this feature, please try again' message. Does anybody know what this usually means?

    Hi Jody,

I'm not too sure. Is this an SAB by any chance?

If you don't get your answer here you should ask over at the Map Maker forum - https://productforums.google.com/for...orum/map-maker

    Hi Colan

Yes it is a SAB, we've only just recently got mapmaker in the UK so I don't know much about it but was thinking this May tie in with a ranking problem I've been having in local results

    Interesting, and address is hidden?

SAB's with hidden address aren't supposed to be visible in Map Maker. So if you are seeing it in Map Maker, period, it almost seems like a bug, or that Google is making some tweaks behind the scenes.

Yes address is hidden, very odd. The marker has a clickable link which returns the error message. No way of editing it, not that I would try through MM anyway! Just wasn't sure if this was important or not and if it could show a potential problem with my local listing

    Hi Jody

There is a mapmaker issue with the page that has all your reviews.

Firstly, that duplicated page issue will need to be taken care of. Whether that will then take care of the mapmaker issue or not, will need to wait and see.

Interestingly, when I search for your business category and have my browser set in that region, I do see you listed as entry A. It's only when search keyword+location that you're not showing in the pack.

    Does that help?

Re: Error while looking up this feature, please try again

Late to the game, but this is a longstanding bug that Google has refused to fix (ever since the new Maps started to appear, almost a year ago), and they're aware of it. It came about when Places made the decision to segregate SABs with hidden addresses from MM, which had all kinds of downstream effects, including breaking Edit details on Google+Local.

It's just the latest in a long line of screwups from the Places team.

Ostensibly, Places claimed that this was done to protect the privacy of businesses, since the full address is visible in MM. Unfortunately, putting aside the fact that privacy and Google are mutually exclusive, the full address for any legal business model is...wait for it...easily Googled. All 50 states have the full addresses for businesses in the Secretary of State corporations database. In some cases, like in my state, they have both the mailing and business address in the same database associated with the business and whatever assumed names it's operating under. Although it's not scrape-able, it is searchable.

This also had the effect of preserving a great deal of SAB spam, since it's almost impossible to remove it via the new RAP (report a problem), and it's invisible in MM, which makes it impossible to remove in MM, period.

    Unintended effects, indeed.
