Does This Forum Have Spam Problems?

Just curious if this website sees a lot of spam accounts trying to sign up and if you have any Vbulletin spam plugins worth sharing. I recently shut down a VB marketing forum I had started up because it wasn't worth dealing withe the spam among other reasons.

re: Does This Forum Have Spam Problems?

TONS! Every forum does. It's a major, major big deal unless you know all the right plugins and how to thwart the spammers. And kind of like with Google, the spammers and their damn bots keep finding ways around the systems, so it requires constant updates and new mods to try to stop them.

However if done right and stayed on top of it works.

I bet most regulars have never even seen a spam post here.

That's because I have the best forum Admin on the planet and he keeps us protected in every way possible. What our filters don't catch, I usually catch manually before it ever makes it to a live post OR right after it hits I nuke it.

I don't even know the names of all the various spam plugins and mods David sets up on the back end. But David will likely see this tomorrow and reply. Or possibly PM you if he does not want the spammers to catch onto all the things we use to try to block them.

He also helps set up other forums and set one up for another one of our members. So if you ever decide to make your forum live again you could contract him to get all the spam stuff as well as other helpful mods set up right.

Re: Does This Forum Have Spam Problems?

There are several we use here, as Linda has indicated. The first line of defense is to turn on the option requiring email validation plus administrator approval of all new registrations: after a while you can spot a spammer or spambot by the characteristics of the registration.

Obviously, I don't want to give away the measures we use publicly since that might very well assist spammers in circumventing the measures we're using, but they do work quite effectively to keep spam to a minimum. I know of no way to reduce it to zero so the second major line of defense is vigilant administrators and moderators.

Running a forum requires daily monitoring and interaction. You need to be prepared for that going into it or your forum will fail for a variety of reasons.
