Yep it's for real! Google just confirmed the Penguin update hit Friday 10/17/14
That was the 1st Penguin update In Over A Year.

I'd been reading all the speculation that Penguin hit this weekend, but some felt it was maybe a different new algo. Good to know it's been confirmed by Google, so we know what it is.

Hopefully some honest businesses that just goofed up, get their "get out of jail free" card!

Barry broke the story over at SEland

But Barry has been sharing the buzz and speculation since Friday here:

I have seen some movement .. some good , some bad. I have some jack a** spamming me with low quality adult type niche related blog comments for my back links.. I am sure that is not helping me to much..

I have seen some EMD getting high rankings in local. Although they say EMD are not as relevant these days I am starting to think Google is sidestepping on that one..

Also seen some spammy sites get on first page after the update.. So so far this Google update is a fail.. I know it may still be rolling out so we will see what happens..

I am sure Googles Adwords revenue will be increasing a LOT this week....:)

Here's some analysis from Jenstar who works closely with Google and also got direct confirmation from them.

John Mueller from Google said in a video hangout this AM, that the roll out is now complete and fully done. So the rankings should be settled in pretty much, as far as Penguin affected sites go.

Penguin discussion starts 46 minutes in. Much of the 1st part is about Google News.

Sounds like John spoke a little too soon, so wanted to update you guys.

It ain't over til it's over - and I guess it ain't quite over afterall.

Per John on G+ not quite done yet: "I might have spoken a bit early, hah - it looks like things may still be happening. I'll double-check in the morning."

I really hope this update hasn't taken effect yet.

I have a couple clients who had shoddy SEO before I took them on.

It's been an absolute struggle with very little results.

I've disavowed links through GWMT a few months ago. I follow the book when it comes to onsite SEO, so there can't be any issues onsite.

I've explained to these few clients that we're waiting for Penguin's update.

If this is it. Then I don't know what else can be done.

Hey Chris

Charlottian* here :)

Seems they are still rolling it out and it may be "weeks" before it is finished.

I would not do anything drastic now other than keep your disavow file up to date and maybe build a few High PR links.

Hopefully we will know what to do and expect in the next few weeks..

Good luck and hope you get your clients back on top...

Yes Chris Ted is right. Another Googler confirmed it will be a slow rollout over weeks.

So hopefully your clients will recover.

This update seems like it didn't really affect much.

My guess is it was just a refresh.
