    START THE NEW YEAR OFF RIGHT! On January 14th 2015 we featured 3 local search experts to discuss the State of Local Search.

    As we start the New Year, it’s the perfect time to look closely at the past, the present & the future of the local search industry. 2014 brought some major changes to the industry, so we’ll look back on the last 12 months with interest, and also consider what we can expect in the months ahead. 3 leading experts will discuss, debate and help us make sense of the current local search space.

    Mike is the most well known figure in the industry and an avid fan of local search; a subject which he writes about on his blog Understanding Google Places & Local Search. Mike’s blog was ranked as the #1 local search blog in our poll at the end of last year & he has already featured on the first InsideLocal webinar of the series – Discussing the Impact of Pigeon Update.

    Yay, I made it to this one!!!! (It's too freaking cold here for my usual wednesday afternoon horse jumping lesson... -8F).

    Great webinar and thanks for the cliff notes, as there was some overlapping in the stereo at times that my earballs couldn't understand.

    I listened to the entire webinar. Very nice. It was interesting to see that none of the commentators would go out on the limb to make big predictions. That is okay. Doing so would be an attempt to predict the future.

    Interesting also that a lot of time inside the webinar was spent referencing smb data, data providers, real time data providers versus slower data providers, etc. Simply many references to smb data from a number of different perspectives.

    The review in G+ is excellent and my recollection of the entire webinar coincides with those comments.

    The panelists spoke to web options outside of google. Still google is the small business internet elephant in the room, from my perspective.

    Lots of references to web advertising. Boy is that relevant in my perspective. On the FB side they drastically cut back on organic distribution of your posts. Every day we get hit with efforts to spend on FB. I think Mike R said it right when he referenced you have to look at every business differently. Some work for SM and some don't.

    On the search side...I just see advertising slowly but surely eating away at all organic and maps visibility, bit by bit, month after month. I don't see any of that diminishing or going in another direction.

    On that note about advertising and referencing it to google....on the same day, a short while ago, Mike B published about more and more local business phone customer service being outsourced to India and how commentators were stating that customer service was worse....I was on the phone with a google adwords "advisor".

    While we were speaking he referenced he had gotten his free google breakfast and lunch that day, and while we were going over details during my hour, he received some free google swag.

    Man, if that isn't a personification of where and how and what google considers important.

    Adwords...very valuable to google
    Local...an afterthought.

    Anyways back to the webinar. Job well done, imho.
