Open Source Search Engine-- Is it possible? What would it look like? Good/Bad?

So, I was snowed in yesterday and drank ALOT of coffee to keep warm & had alot of time on my hands so I began thinking.... And one of the things that I was thinking about was "What would an open-source search engine look like, and could it work?"

This all started after I read Google Search Market Drop Mozilla - Business Insider and started thinking about how successful Firefox is ....

So here are my random thoughts/questions:

Would black-hats immediately take it over and ruin it? Or could the code-monkeys keep up and write out black-hat methods from the algo?

Would the PUBLIC use the search engine? Many people are married to Google... but there is a huge "transparency" and "support independent" movement, so perhaps people would like the idea of an open-source search engine...

Would there be enough TRUSTWORTHY volunteers to make verifying listings/adding sites to a "blacklist" or "spam list" possible?

I'd love to hear other peoples thoughts on this, and what other questions would have to be answered.

    Hi Kate,

    Too much coffee, eh?

Not sure if they are open source but there are so many alternate SEs that just have not grabbed much marketshare. Like Blekko, Baidu, Duck Duck Go and others.

Why are you thinking about starting one, or just curious?

    Just curious

I'm wayyyyy too busy to start a project myself, but I was thinking if there was enough brainstorming/interest, maybe someone would think it's worthwhile to take it on. I really like the concept, and there's so many people with great ideas to reduce spam on Google, it would be nice for them to have an outlet to actually make things happen!

I think especially if the anti-spam community could get really involved, it would be a win for SEOs/Public/Businesses.
