2015 Is The Year Of Message Boards And Forums

Everything is going social. I know there are many folks that read this forum for it's knowledge, but don't join because they think forums are old school.

For me forums are just such an easier platform for communicating, organizing info and finding info. I love our G+ Community, but it's missing SO many features we have here and is so much harder to navigate and see everything.

Posts get lost and buried on G+, never to be read. But with the "recent posts" feature here for example, you can see a reply that was made even if the original post was from last month. I could name 20 other helpful features we have here that G+ Communities don't have yet.

But as a forum owner, the main thing is I own this content, and control upgrades and features. If you build your community on Google or Facebook, you own nothing and control nothing. If they decide to change the whole thing or drag their feet on needed features you are at their mercy. If Google ever decides Communities go the way of Reader and many other products, the community is lost.

So I was glad to see this post. Not sure it will come true, but interesting to me nonetheless.

2015 Is The Year Of Message Boards And Forums

In the beginning, the Internet was populated by an infinite number of ad hoc communities. From ANSI BBS dial up communities in the 80s to the Internet Newsgroups of the 90s to the forums of the 2000s, there have always been private and personal virtual online communities have have served members honestly, openly, through trust, and protected by the power of anonymity or through members-only protection. Over the past decade, these safe and private communities have been consumed and subsumed by Facebook, Google, Twitter, Reddit, and others.

In 2015, there will be a return from renting a little piece of a very large development to buying one’s very own retreat for his or herself and a number of close friends. Until now, the barrier has been the technology, but as we move forward, it’s easier, cheaper, and more convenient to take the bull by the horns and create a space of one’s own without the noise of advertisement, without the threat of eavesdropping, and without the guarantee that things will remain the same into the future.
David, thought you might like this too.

    Thoughts anyone?

Re: 2015 Is The Year Of Message Boards And Forums

Message boards are not going away anytime soon. However, I am not sure if we will have a 'year of message boards' come any more. A few years back if you were scared about a medical condition, or your computer stopped working, the only place you could ask (outside the real world that is) were forums. Today, you have Facebook to ask your friends for help, you could ask them anonymously on sites like reddit - the time when forums did this exclusively does not exist any more.

Add to this, the fact that Google has been penalizing for content it doesn't like. In a user generated content setting, you do not have a regulation that there is in editorial-driven content. So from an SEO perspective too, the opportunities for forum is not as much as it did a few years back.

Call me old fashioned, but I much prefer forums over social & find this forum particularly useful and interesting
