Is that a Local Doorway Page or a Local Landing Page?

That seems to be the question of the day lately.

"Nifty Lance" did a fun and informative post over at Nifty Marketing I wanted to share.

<a href="http://niftymarketing.com/local-landing-pages-really-doorway-pages/">Are Local Landing Pages Really Doorway Pages?</a>

The problem is in the example I gave about the attorney. Does an attorney, who can actually practice law in an entire state, if so desired (or nation wide in some cases), really have to limit which keywords they go after to just where their office is? No, they don?t.

Google?s update clarified things a bit. They gave us questions to ask in order to diagnosis whether or not our landing pages are truly considered a doorway page.

So let?s put a local landing page to the test. Here?s a great example page:

Great stuff Lance and love the images!

Here are a couple previous resources in case you missed them.

My original post regarding the update:
<a href="http://www.localsearchforum.com/google-local-important/29401-google-warns-about-doorway-page-algo-update-could-affect-local.html">Google Warns about Doorway Page Algo Update - Could Affect Local</a>

Everyone should read that before freaking out too much about legit location pages.
Google actually wants them in the index.
(See the 2 Google docs linked inside that post.)
If unique content that's designed for users and not just to funnel search traffic you should be fine.

And in our InsideLocal Multi-Location Webinar we discussed the update with leading local pros:
<a href="http://www.localsearchforum.com/insidelocal-webinars/29218-multi-location-local-search-optimization-webinar.html">Multi-Location Local Search Optimization Webinar</a>

What do you think???

This is a great article that provides great clarification. I find that with most questions like this boil down to intent. If you are intending to trick or game users or search engines then you should stop but if what you are doing is useful then it's probably OK. That's the SEO meter stick that we have found most useful.

Great post Linda!

This post is really comprehensive, and does a nice job breaking down each question that we need to answer for clients. That one is definitely getting bookmarked
