Google Map Spam Attacks Cause Temporary Shutdown for MapMaker Edits

Not sure if this has been posted, but it looks like MapMaker edits will temporarily shutdown and go into a backlog starting May 12th.

As some of you know already, we have been experiencing escalated attacks to spam Google Maps over the past few months. The most recent incident was particularly troubling and unfortunate - a strong user in our community chose to go and create a large scale prank on the Map. As a consequence, we suspended auto-approval and user moderation across the globe, till we figured out ways to add more intelligent mechanisms to prevent such incidents.

All of our edits are currently going through a manual review process.

We have been analyzing the problem and have made several changes. However, it is becoming clear that fixing some of this is actually going to take longer than a few days. As you can imagine, turning automated and user moderation off has the direct implication of very large backlogs of edits requiring manual review. This in turn means your edits will take a long time to get published.

re: Google Map Spam Attacks Cause Temporary Shutdown for MapMaker Edits

    Thanks for sharing Scott!

I was just reading it because Jo Shear posted in the Pro Community too. Was coming to share here so THX you saved me some key strokes.

I wonder which prank it was that shut down MM editing? The Snowden @ the Whitehouse thing was awhile back, but I know it continues to get big press. Then there was the Android bot peeing on the Apple logo in April.

I recently saw another prank - someone put something that didn't belong and seemed like a prank right at G headquarters I think. But I was all tied up posting about an update and there was a blur of intense activity and I lost track of the post and just don't remember what it was.

So I guess Brian finally got what he's been after. But I know this will put a crimp in the works for some of you that have problem children to work on.

Re: Google Map Spam Attacks Cause Temporary Shutdown for MapMaker Edits

OK found more info and this has been brewing for awhile.

See this post at the MM forum - Apr 28:

Strange mapping behavior of our Ukrainian friends - Google Product Forums

    jayanth - Google Employee

I am one of the Product Managers working on Map Maker.

I have been posting some thoughts on a separate thread in the power mapper forum. It has been a busy few days for us and I haven't updated anything here. Besides, as Flash pointed out, a lot has transpired over a weekend but being a weekend, we did not have everyone necessary to handle communications on the forum. Just a bunch of us got together to handle the situation that came to light on Friday evening in India, where the Map Maker engineering team works out of.

As a short summary - we had several prank attacks last week. A couple of them were, unfortunately launched by highly trusted users with 1000+ successful edits in the system. The entire moderation system for Map Maker relies on user trust - more good edits a user does, the greater the system trusts the user. So when one amongst the most trusted in the group chooses to play a large scale prank that creates an embarrassment, addressing it in a controlled manner is not as easy as it might appear from the outside. It is such a fundamental assumption in the model that our options were few - it forced us to take action that was immediate to prevent copy-cat tendencies in other users (and we observed a lot of it in the edits that users were submitting around the world - that's what happens when press picks up a story and it goes viral).

The immediate action we could take was also severe - we have essentially disabled auto and user led moderation to ensure nothing gets published on Maps till we have something more intelligent in place. I ask you to trust me that we are figuring a way out - we know this is not fair to the overall community, nor is it serving the purpose of keeping Google Maps more useful to the even larger base of people who use it. We are thinking about technical solutions to the problem and ways to mitigate after effects when such attacks happen. A lot of hard working people work on Google Maps on areas unrelated to Map Maker and an act like this has made all of them more worried. We, the Map Maker team, owe them the assurance that we can prevent and contain damage.

So please be patient with us, while we figure this out out. It might take longer than any of us would like, but its not because we are not aware or working to fix it. When we are ready to get back to business as usual, I'll be the first to let you know.
Then there is this post too with more info.

Is Google restricting edit approves again? or is it just me? - Google Product Forums

User AaronXP said: "Everybody is affected, even RER. Only Google Employees have the power to publish edits. Every edit made by users goes to review. The exact timeline when they are going to turn on the Automatic Moderator is unknown. I have dozens of pending edits."

And in that forum post this TechCrunch article from April 24th was referenced:

Google Works To Improve Spam Detection Systems On Google Maps After Obscene Edits | TechCrunch

The TechCrunch post credits the problems in part to the Android bot peeing on Apple (shows image, if by chance you missed that one) and the “Edwards Snow Den” incident.

nitricboy, the Map Maker user behind the peeing Android bot I talked about in the 1st post is still at it. Still trying to make edits, but they are being denied.

    Thanks for the updates!
Looking forward to see what they're going to put in place to stop spammers... I really hope it still allows those editors trying to correct spammy listings to do so!

Not sure if this has been mentioned. I was able to go through the process of editing maps and did not receive a notice that maps was shut down, yet if you look down in the lower right you will see a little box to click, which shows the notice.
