Did Local Directories Get Hit By Google’s Doorway Page Algo?

Did Local Directories Get Hit By Google’s Doorway Page Algo?
    by Andrew Shotland
    May 15, 2015

Andrew Shotland notes data showing a downturn in traffic across the board for YellowPages.com, FourSquare, CitySearch, and others coinciding with the launch of Google's Doorway Page update.

Perhaps SEMRush is still updating but if its organic search traffic graphs are even close to accurate it looks like May is the month that Google took care of all Local family business...

Barry Schwartz noted a Google Webmaster Forums thread on the subject where Google’s Eric Kuan from the search quality team highlighted a post that included the following:

An example of doorways is when you have a website with 200 pages on it, all of which have the same basic text but with place names switched out on each page (“Find a taxi in London”/”Find a taxi in New York City”). The pages are designed to rank separately, catch keyword searches, but funnel all the traffic to one destination.

Jennifer Slegg at TheSEMPost reported last week that Google’s Doorway Page Update is live and is continuously updating. If this data is correct (that’s not always the case with these tools) then there’s a good chance these sites have been Doorwayed.

Oh good catch David! Somehow I missed that one.

Interesting that in the SEMrush traffic graphs he shares, all those companies almost have the same exact downward arc. Sure seems like there is something there.

I actually did a post about Barry's post yesterday but was covering the Webmaster forum thread he talked about from a little different angle.

Google Local: Multi-Location Doorways for Chains and Franchises

I think I have some really spammy plumber sites saved somewhere that had a bunch of city doorways. If I get time I'll try to find them again and see if they are still ranking.

Some arguments about wither it was the doorway update or another update of the unofficial variety. Either way, looks like many local directories took a kick to the grion. Convenient for Google? Can't blame citygrid media subscribing to Yext with updates like this.

Ya Cody, I was just catching up with the comments over there. Interesting.

"Can't blame citygrid media selling to Yext"

FYI they didn't sell to Yext and Yext didn't do anything to cause Citysearch to change what they are doing. They just saw the Yext tool for claiming and liked it and wanted to try it. That's the truth of what happened.

But re ranking changes, I just checked all the packs I track and am not seeing much movement. But there are some new players in some packs I watch so if time I want to see what they are doing to push into very well established packs.

In fact one makes no sense at all so I might do a "Why Ranks High" ranking puzzle about it next week so we can tear it apart and see what makes the big G like this one.

This is interesting as some markets (real estate, in particular) rely on barnacle strategies so I am curious to see if later iterations of this "update" will effect bigger directory sites like Yelp.

Re: Did Local Directories Get Hit By Google’s Doorway Page Algo?

There's a lot of searches I'm seeing with more local businesses and less local directories (cool!). However there are still some search types (hair salons is one I can think of off the top of my head) that are still heavily dominated by Yelp pages. I definitely think there was a shake up, but i'm not sure if it was isolated to certain verticals or not.

Definitely a win for the local business websites... so far

We saw a ~10-12% ranking increase across the board. So something is definitely up. Can't say we're unhappy about directories losing visibility though
