No More Organic Results Above the Pack

I had this hit my inbox over the weekend. I have gotten a few results where the organic slips in before the pack but it seems that Google thinks I am doing a branded search ("auto glass repair" being one). Is anyone else noticing this?

Is anyone else noticing this? Maybe Google isn't trying to diss local search like we had previously thought?

Thanks for sharing Jen's post Michael.

Yes, Google stopped showing organic above the pack a week ago. We've been discussing. I think Dave was the 1st to make that observation a week ago today in fact.

OR I think again this is just one more small step on the way to doing full pay-to-play on all local. Removing organic from the top won't cause a big uproar now. Then we'll be used to the local pack being on top, then it will change to a paid local pack.

Note the new Home Service Ads Launch. No organic on top AND also no free packs below.
Only 3 paid local ads - replacing the local listings.

Re: No More Organic Results Above the Pack

Changes like this are all the more reason why you shouldn't be 100% reliant on traffic from Google (whether local pack or organic). At this point I'm just going to accept that Google will eventually cripple the "free" playing field to drive more ad dollars, so i'm becoming less anxious about a full roll-out. I may even use this as leverage to drive a multi-channel marketing strategy and do PPC management in a package. I'm happy I was a paid search analyst for a few years in the last agency I worked for

This is another great example of why you need to diversify your marketing efforts, so when one channel makes a substantial change you won't get hit from it. Sad to see this change happening, but there's not a lot we can do to change Google's course of action.

I hesitate to believe that Google would go full pay to play for several but who knows what their long-term goals are except in those in their offices. There would be many holes in a search environment that worked this way and it would only give ground for a new player to rise to the search traffic throne. Perhaps G is finally noticing the pirate's dilemma that they are in and trying to get creative with their solutions. I hope these things are just being tested and G comes up with a solution that works for all parties. This is just another point to the fact that one day businesses will have to participate in all areas of marketing (both digital and non) in order to compete.

Just because we had a client call earlier today saying that they found us searching for "nebraska seo", I did a check here and it looks like we're still slipping in on the organic before the map pack.

I haven't found any other searches that are showing in the organic pack. Also it appears that other states are showing the pack first. I guess we're just special in Nebraska

If google goes to pay-to-play for local, what does that leave us Local SEO's then?

That's rather bothersome, as I for one, provide for my family with local and pack SEO services.

Re: No More Organic Results Above the Pack

There will be a need to rank organically in their local market, and I don't see Google doing away with that unless they want a full revolt lol.

I think the next step is to get creative with driving leads from other sources. The real skill we have as local seo's is identifying where we can drive leads for the local business through online channels, and executing a strategy that will bring them business. Ranking well is definitely important, but I don't think that needs to be the major KPI you're selling a client on.

I agree on the organic @Eric

Can you elaborate on the "the online" channels you are referring to?

    PPC? FB? Youtube?

The only thing with the above is you just get a management fee, which usually is quite small, so makes it tough to provide for your family with that approach.

Re: No More Organic Results Above the Pack

It's really wherever your target audience is going. I've seen PPC work really well for some and poor for others, FB (organic) and FB ads work well for some and not so much for others, etc... etc.. All depends on the strategy. The point was to diversify your tactics and strategies because you don't control the environment. In most cases we sell consulting for a product we have very little control over, so make sure a hit to one doesn't tank the whole campaign.
