    Great topic! In addition, depending on the site, it's important to have some kind of review strategy around it. Third party reviews are a pretty high ranking factor and will continue to be as reviews become an increasingly important part of the buying process.

    Category selection is huge too!

    Colan, yes, a review strategy is so important! I personally, since I love social media like to include links to connect on socials (if space allows). Taking the conversation to other sites where you can create a personal connection beyond the directory listing helps build brand loyalty in my opinion.

    Wanted to share some thoughts around a Twitter convo I had today...

    Instead of thinking "How can we rank higher" think "How can we WOW our customers!"

    You can't say much in a Tweet so I wanted to expand on that.

    I wasn't talking about wowing customers with great service or prices. (That's a given!) What I was thinking is find something very unique you can offer on your site that no one else in your market is offering.

    For example: A Dentist could offer a free online smile makeover if they have the computer imaging software to do that. That gives people something to talk about and a reason to link to you.

    And also when they read in your directory listing that they can "try on a new smile!" It gives them a good reason to click your link and visit your site.

    Of course they would limit that free offer to people in the local area that could be prospective patients. And they would also have a lead capture form in order to get the makeover. And then someone could follow up and offer a free cosmetic Dentistry consultation.

    Or even just add a virtual tour. Then in your directory listing you could say:
    "Come explore our store without leaving your easy chair! (Or something like that.)

    Linda, totally loving and digging the online smile idea. That is a home run in my book. Creating that technology and promoting it on all the spaces would be super easy and people would visit the site in droves to "Try on a new smile".

    BTW.... Love @ConfluentForms. He needs to come speak at #RocksDigital 2016 and yes, I am partial. :-)

    In a previous life I sold cosmetic imaging systems to high profile Dentists who would offer the service in office. That was back before everyone was online and the cost was prohibitive. $25,000 back then. But I'm sure now there is affordable sw you could add to any PC for a reasonable price.

    Thanks for sharing the article - I liked the idea of going beyond the basics and including items that make your business stand out:
    "Languages spoken
    Payment methods
    Products and services offered
    Special qualifications or accreditation"

    I also include items such as: parking (is it free, easy, etc?); public transport options (important in a city like Melbourne that prides itself on public transport) and photos if possible.

    It's not so much a secret, but I like to encourage clients to include their top profiles in their email signature. If you're an attorney, link to your AVVO and FindLaw profiles. If you're in home services, like a plumber/HVAC/roofer, link to your Angie's List profile.

    If you're not sure what profile has the most authority for your industry/keyword, simply do a Google search for [keyword] + citation or [keyword] + directory, and you'll see what sites rank best for your designated keyword.

    Rachel, that is a great idea on including links to top profiles in signatures. I am sure that helps drive reviews also. The tip you shared on how to search to find what a sites authority is a big win too. Keep 'em coming.
