Oh man, fajitas sound good. I work from home, but I should maybe institute a fajita Wednesday in my business as well...

Interesting article Bill, I'm excited to see what happens with the promoted pins. Though you used the phrase 'popup ads'... that means something very specific to me, is Google actually considering popups in their map results? I haven't seen anything hinting to that anywhere else, it'd be a big deal if so though. I'd be surprised if that was a direction they were considering, I can't imagine that doing anything other than disrupting the searcher's process.

    Hi James,
What I was referring to was the fact that the promoted pins that show up on the map will "pop up" when you're near a business that has paid Google. So, as you drive around and are looking at Google maps, or walking near a business, their promoted pin will "pop up".

I could imagine that if you're using Google Maps as a navigation device while driving, having these ads pop up like this could be rather annoying. It doesn't sound as if you'll be able to turn them off, either.

Ah, I understand now. Thanks for the clarification. That'll still be potentially a disrupting experience to have things come up while driving around, but we'll see how it works in practice.

    James,
I typically use the Waze app (which uses Google Maps data) and they do actually have popups but they pop up and then go away from time to time. It's kind of annoying, but you get used to it.

I suspect, in the case of Google Maps, it would depend on how many ads or pins they've sold and what city you're in.

Bill, you keep bragging about the Waze app. I guess I need to check it out.
