Arrow Pokemon Go Mania Is Here — This Is What It Means For Location-Based Marketers - GeoMa

This post brought to you by GeoMarketing

The Pokemon Go app has achieved the status of “instant hit” since it’s release in the U.S., filling up social media feeds and sending players with smartphones racing all over their cities to catch and train virtual characters in the physical world. Even more surprisingly than the fact that an app inspired by a 21-year-old … Continue reading Pokemon Go Mania Is Here — This Is What It Means For Location-Based Marketers

Re: Pokemon Go Mania Is Here — This Is What It Means For Location-Based Marketers - G

Ok... I'll start by saying I did download this and am actively playing it. There's a couple of huge things i've noticed about this game that's worth exploring more. The first is the potential to bring people to your business by setting up lures for pokemon. You either do it during the lunch hour or happy hour. Different pokemon come out at different times of the day, so if you're going to market through this game you need to time it right and play it strategically.

The second very important aspect i've noticed while playing is that people usually don't play alone. You will see couples and groups out searching and playing together, because you need multiple people to search an area. Cater to that somehow. To stick with the restaurant path, you could set up a lures to bring people in then do couple or app specials targeted to the groups coming in. Business owners also need to be aware if their business is a "gym." I've seen a few of restaurants in my area that are gyms. This is an automatic draw to players to advance in the game. Run a "pokemon training night" or "team battle night" during one of the slow days to boost revenue during the week.

There's a lot of potential, but business owners need to be aware and be creative with the strategy. You don't need to directly buy ads, but spending some money within the game to bring in players for an hour or two seems pretty simple.

Besides bars/restaurants what other business types do you think could benefit from the game? This may be a trend which could last for a few weeks or a few months, but who cares? It's fun to explore and there's an opportunity to make money if you're creative enough with it.

I was trying to find every reason in the world not to download this app but the opportunities you bring up makes me want to get creative with it. Great insight, Eric.

As stupid as it sounds, it does have more active users than Tinder and soon to surpass major social media sites. If you're quick you can pull in revenue before the bubble potentially pops. We'll see how long it lasts

Studies show that it is on pace to have more users than Twitter. That is astonishing to me. I wonder what their end-game is because they definitely have a hot product!

Re: Pokemon Go Mania Is Here — This Is What It Means For Location-Based Marketers - G

I know pokemon Go added 7.5+ billion to Nintendo's market value, so I knew it made a BIG splash. Haha, I'd never even thought it could add to a small business owner's marketing mix, that's insane. Those are great ideas Eric. I don't have any clients I think that'd apply to, so at least I can safely continue ignoring all this. I like to be a little more present when I'm outside (read: I'm enough of a space case sometimes even without a phone in front of me)

As far as businesses that are impacted... I've heard about golf courses struggling with zombies wandering around getting hit by golf balls because they're not paying any attention to where they are or what's going on around them. The world didn't really need more people not looking where they're going, but so it goes. It's wild how many vastly different marketing opportunities there are for business owners in this day and age...
