This post brought to you by Local SEO Guide

    Interesting.

How do you do the Keyword Planner research if you're spending in Adwords? I just resigned myself to dealing with the grouping.

So if you do any level of spending your Keyword Planner is enhanced by default?

It seems so. I never saw the ranged keyword data, and my personal gmail account I'm usually logged into when doing research has had maybe $100 in ad spend years ago. It's definitely a low ceiling, whatever it is.

Now that the Google Keyword Planner only gives ranges, how are people doing keyword research for local SEO?

I use other tools, but both KW Planner and Moz' tool have ranges. The ranges really aren't a deal breaker, since I can at least get an idea if the term is popular or not. Seems like if you really want the granular detail, you'll have to start running ads... at least in a small capacity to start.

It's possible to get non-ranged data (I link to an explanation of how in my post above). And this data is generally more specific too because it factors in click-stream data (estimated CTR etc) rather then just search volume.

$GOOG keeps trying to move the cheese, but you can still find a nice burrata if you look hard enough
