New Free Tool: Check to see if a Domain is a Good Citation Source

All citations are not equal in the eyes of Google!

Not all citation sources are created equal; While some may help you rank better, some citation sources will only hurt your rankings.

So, how do we actually find out if a domain is a good citation source? Well, there are a few things you can check to assess if the domain is spammy or not -
    1) See if the visual design is of good quality.
    2) Check the number of indexed pages.
    3) Check the domain age.
    4) Check the ranking.

But again, most of this is based on our judgment. Sometimes, a site that lists local businesses in a small town might have a low PR, a low DA and a shabby design but still be an excellent citation source.

We wanted to remove this uncertainty from deciding if a domain is a good citation source and built the Citation Checker Tool.
It will give you a brief idea about the site - the domain age, the quality of anchor text etc., and will also tell you if the website is a good citation source.

The tool is still in its nascent stages and we wanted to know what the fine folks at LSF think about it!
Take it for a spin and let us know your thoughts!

This is great! I usually have to use a few sources to qualify domains. Thanks for sharing.

Darn. I keep getting an error message. Looking forward to when this is back online to test it out. What a good idea.

Re: New Free Tool: Check to see if a Domain is a Good Citation Source

My apologies for the delay. It is working for me now although there is the occasional run that gives me an error.

It's an interesting tool...but I did run quite a few icky directories through it and got results telling me it was a good citation source. Here's an example:

    Name: Screen Shot 2016-12-09 at 2.28.42 PM.jpg
Views: 38
Size: 37.7 KB

Here's a page from that directory:

    Name: Screen Shot 2016-12-09 at 2.34.10 PM.jpg
Views: 82
Size: 135.1 KB

That said...Hopefully most SEOs would be able to recognize that a directory like that is not a good citation source.

Interesting tool--I'm just not sure where you're getting all of the data? I checked my own domain name (my website) and it says that there is a claim button: "Has Claim Your Business button" which truly doesn't exist on my site.

Is it just checking for a contact form or another form on the site?

Good catch. I ran three of my directories through it, none of which have any "claim your business" buttons. The tool reported that one of them - eldersell.com - did have such a button.

Re: New Free Tool: Check to see if a Domain is a Good Citation Source

    Hi guys,

Thanks for testing out the tool, we always expected some bugs. We will work on the ones you have pointed out. And do keem 'em coming.

The Mystery of The Claim Button!

So this one works by striping all the strings on your home page and comparing them against a pre-defined set of strings such as "Claim Your Business" "Add your business" etc. If one or more of such buttons/links are present, we identify "Claim Button" as being present.

    Fix
    You can see the brashness of the implementation, so we have to perhaps remove a few keywords from the file which are causing the incorrect recognition. {Any better ideas on how we can do this other than searching the text"}

How the tool works and Odd Citation Sources

To put it simply we have assigned each of the items such as domain age, citation score, etc. a weighted percentage for what goes into making good citation. According to how these numbers add up we give each site a unique score and based on that score we assign them Good, Ok and Bad Citation Source as final results.

    Fix
We will tweak a combination of the item weightages assigned to item and its score on the item(if any) based on checking how the errant websites managed to wriggle in through.

(i.e. find what combination of scores of each item led to this result of an incorrect ciation coming through, then tweak the scores just enough to get this incorrect website into the bad result. Each time we do such a tweak and fix an error, the system gets a little better. With enough errors and corrections, it can become a better tool. )
