    While the real fault for the spam is on the people posting the fake listings, it would still be great to see Google taking better steps to eliminate the spam. It'll be interesting to see how the advanced verification system changes things.

    I agree, James, it seems like the guilty party are the black hatters putting the listings up but I think this choice came down to who has bigger pockets.

    They should remember the old saying, be careful what you wish for. Google's answer may well be to require more and more local businesses to sign up for pay for play listings with the commercial justification that it allows them to confirm the validity of the companies being listed in the SERPs.

    Mind you, Google owns the house so they get to make the house rules anyway, and so this lawsuit will probably have no chance whatsoever of proceeding to trial. At least that's my take on it.
