David Mihm's Local Search Ranking Factors 2012 just came out again in June. In this time of chaotic Google Places/Google+ Local changes, you will want to be sure to read every word and bookmark it for future reference.

I was honored to be selected as a contributor again this year, along with a distinguished group of local marketing experts from around the world to share insights and opinions about the most important Google local ranking factors.

This year's survey delved into more details about the affect social signals and finer points like review velocity have on the ranking algo.

If you deal with Google Places/Google+ Local SEO, then you know David's Local Search Ranking Factors is considered THE holy grail for local search. Be sure to read it top to bottom, especially the wise comments from all the experts.

Oh and good luck getting anything else done today! ;-)

PS Huge thanks go out again to David for coordinating everyone?s efforts and compiling all this data for the benefit of small businesses and the local marketing industry!

Here is the blog about about it if you want to read what folks are saying or want to weigh in. Local Search Ranking Factors, Vol. 5

This really is the holy grail! Bookmark it, print it and study it! That's what I do!:)

I was a little bit disappointed when I saw the results, to be honest. Last year I wrote a critique on the survey and mentioned some factors which I do not agree with, and I was planning of doing the same this year, but I can see there is not much point in this. I assume there are two main reasons of why the results are VERY inaccurate and not consistent with the real situation:

1) What I mentioned in my comments below the study - there is more than one type of local search results, and the factors greatly vary for each of these types.

2) The background of the specialists invited to take the survey and their experience with local search are different. Their level of observation is different and some of them might be relying too much on outdated data.

Just my 2 cents.

Good points Nyag.

One unrelated point I've always wanted to mention about PARTICIPATING this year and should probably tell David. But I never saw where you could add comments. Even after I saw that some people like you Nyag HAD added lots of comments, I went back into my spreadsheet and could not find where to add them.

Felt a little dense so never brought it up but I saw another contributor comment on the same thing, so guess I wasn't the only one.
