How to find a good SEO local company?

There are 13 quadrillion "SEO" companies out there and most of them have the same sales pitches. It seems if you have a heart beat, you can be "google certified or accredited".

How can I as a business owner distinguish between a good firm and a not so good firm?

I have an empty hull of a website that is in desperate need of SEO local content as I am a SAB. I need my website to generate leads for me.

Any advise you guys can share so I can make informed decisions when interviewing and hiring a firm ?

Re: How to find a good SEO local company?

Hi Kyrton, I can understand why it must be hard to choose the best. There are so many bad ones out there.

What I recommend is to look at top SEOs that are highly visible, help others and put their reputation and knowledge out there for all to see - like members we have here.

    WHY?

    1) If they are willing to "pay it forward" by helping people here for free - they are more likely to be committed to really helping clients as well. (Same goes for the Google GMB Community)

    2) You can get a sense of who they are, how much they know and see if they are someone you think you would work well with.

    3) If you pick a Google Top Contributor I think it's a huge plus. They work directly with Google management and really know their stuff. 6 of the 9 Google TCs in the world are also Top Contributors here. PM me if you'd like a recommendation. If so, let me know what industry, as that could affect who I recommend.

Re: How to find a good SEO local company?

One thing to consider is to look at your local competitors who are doing well in search rankings and also similar ones in other nearby towns and try to tell which firms are helping them with SEO. Sometimes the names of their website designers will be in the page footers, and you can try contacting those designers. You can also just call up the owners of the ones who aren't really in direct competition with you due to geographical separation.

You could also try Google searching for terms like "electrician SEO consultants"

Plan to take a little time before you actually can make an informed choice. It will be worth it to take the time to find a good one.

Re: How to find a good SEO local company?

    Thanks Tim.
I tried that and most of the firms don't put themselves on the website in my area.
Maybe next week I will make some phone calls and see where I can get with that.

I've google different terms and found a lot of companies. My issue is knowing to determine a mediocre one from an amazing one.

Hello, I really like this article. It has s a list of questions you can ask a potential SEO company: How to Choose An SEO Agency (and Prevent Failure). You can use this information to help protect yourself.

This is a big issue in the SEO industry and I am looking into solving it. If you want you can checkout a new tool I'm building here: ROI Rescue | See If Your SEO Company Is Ripping You Off!. I have a long way to go with it.

A good place to find a list of Local SEO experts would be to start with the list at the bottom of this survey under contributors: Local Search Ranking Factors Study 2017 - Local SEO | Moz | Moz

That being said, your budget will also determine who you should/can hire as some of these companies require much larger budgets than others.

Re: How to find a good SEO local company?

Interview companies before you decide on one. See which ones are going to be transparent with their process and reporting. So many companies give vague answers or hide your data. The worst thing is have a marketing company hold the keys to your website analytics (or GSC) and only send you PDFs. Make sure you're always in control of your data.

Most importantly, make sure you find a partner. Any agency or consultant you work with should be an extension of your team. If you can find someone or a company you feel comfortable with, then test the waters. Like you would with your own team, set up regular meeting times (depending on your budget), and set realistic goals/milestones for the project. If a company does not set goals from the start, that's a red flag that they're going to show you busywork each month and not really invested in your business.
