Post Relocation, Relocation, Relocation - A "New" Local Ranking Tactic?

Google’s marketshare and success at fighting spam in rankings continues to create pressure in the local search ecosystem as businesses vie to rank higher than one another in various markets. Some businesses are now resorting to relocating under the assumption that this will give them an advantage in rankings. Will it? Read on to find out.

Unfortunately, they can sometimes rise and fall abruptly and alarmingly, causing consternation. Google makes hundreds of changes to its algorithms and design of the search results pages each year, and many of these changes can affect the local search rankings to one degree or another. Local search results in Google arguably can involve more variables than nearly any other type of Web content, and they can involve a number of interlocking processes or the combined influence of multiple algorithms.

I know of one lawyer in Naples who thinks he can rank better being closer to the city center than his current location. Even is trying the "virtual office" rabbit hole despite having a good ranking.

Regarding your comment on the blog that you have to "close" a business that moves and creating new one at the new address; I'm not familiar with the guidelines that require this. If there is no name change why the new feature?

Hi Andrew - it's not a guideline. Frustratingly it's NOWHERE the average SMB will ever see it, but it's strongly Google's recommended best practice for moves. Bottom line IMO due to the scraping mechanism being so funky that if you just edit address on current listing the data will keep getting overwritten.

I've posted SO much on this. Don't want to re-hash. See all links in this post for details and one link you'll see quotes from Vanessa saying it's what you need to do and since then Jade and Joel say same thing.

Yay! PERMANENTLY CLOSED - Moved Business - Google Update

Hope that helps explain or gives what you need. If you need more direct quotes or references let me know.
