Dropped my New Galaxy S4 Phone - Killed it - $600 Mistake

So mad! Didn't even have it a week. Never even made a single call.

It's dead. I killed it. I've never dropped a phone. This was a small drop AND I had it in a really good case. Should not have broke and died. But alas it did.

AND due to contract I'm in will cost 600 for a new one.

It only cost 100 get this one due to special trade in deal since my other contract was up. BUT since I broke screen they can't do a warranty swap. So I'm stuck. In fact AT&T cannot even sell me a new phone. I have to buy an unlocked or pre-paid and swap the sim cards.

Thing is I'm chained to my desktop 70 hours a week so I never use my phone. If I traveled and needed it for work I'd easily drop 600 for business. BUT I never ever use it because I'm always home.

So now need to shop all over again. This time just for a cheapo cuz I'm not paying 600 for a phone I only use twice a month.

    Sad... Mad....

    Thanks for letting me vent.

Before you do that, do a search for repairs for a broken screen.

I did that for one of my nieces and discovered there were places in Ottawa that could repair a screen for surprisingly little... like $50-80.

Re: Dropped my New Galaxy S4 Phone - Killed it - $600 Mistake

    Thanks David.

I had 3 really sharp AT&T guys look at it and it's a really weird problem that we think is more than the screen. You can barely see the crack - but it won't ring. And there's weird merged ghosty patterns that come and go then it goes blank. It's def more than a cracked screen. It's like short circuited or something.

But I guess it would not hurt to try to find a phone repair place and see if they think it's fixable. I'm looking at all the options just had not Googled phone repair locally yet.

But 1st thing I'm doing tomorrow is calling At&t. Been with them for 12 years and sometimes they make exceptions. A phone in a case should not break from a small drop like that. It was only 2 feet. I didn't like throw it across the room or anything.

But if that doesn't work I did find a local phone repair guy that has rave reviews. (Hopefully not fake )
So I'll take to him and see what he thinks.

Hi Linda, I feel you pain. I did the same think with my new s4. Was waiting for this awesome case that i ordered online and kept getting delayed. I dropped it and cracked the screen. I ended up getting it repaired at local place. They replaced the screen and it cost me $300. Looks like new phone again. I hope you solve your problem.

I cannot tolerate how these cell carriers treat their existing customers, especially customers who have been around for 12 years! That is absurd that they can do nothing for you and only offer you to pay full retail for a new phone.

Anyway you can chalk it up to a phone malfunction at another corporate store? Are you 100% certain you don't have insurance on the phone? Sometimes the carriers fail to advise you that you have been paying for phone insurance since your last contract update. Happened to me and I had to place a few calls in order to have the charges removed from my account.

Good luck! I'm surprised the iPhone fanboys[girls] haven't jumped into this discussion ;-)

Re: Dropped my New Galaxy S4 Phone - Killed it - $600 Mistake

    Thanks guys,

This story had a happy ending. Forgot to update this thread.

    I got a new Galaxy 4s, full warranty for $162! Here's how.

The phone repair guy that had those raving Yelp reviews? He was the real deal!

Said he could fix but would have to order parts and would be really expensive. He told me about an At&t Device Support Center that does warranty replacement that would give me a new phone for 162. Full warranty, guaranteed to be good as new, instant exchange for 162.

He said: "I could just take your money, but I'll tell you a secret, there's an option hardly anyone knows about and this is what I would do if I were you."

Wasn't sure it was true. Called that division and YEP! The AT&T guys too said hardly anyone knows they offer that 162 replacement because it's a new program and they purposely keep it on the down low cuz if everyone knew they'd have a line out the door and no warranty replacement stock.

Drove down to San Diego Friday night. Walked in, exchanged. Like new. Full warranty. $162 out the door, including tax.

SOOOOO if you ever kill your Galaxy and are with AT&T, find a Device Support Center. Here is SoCal list. http://www.wireless.att.com/support_..._cust_form.pdf

Oh and ordered 2 new cases. The one I had was rated super high, looked great, kickstand etc. BUT evidently was not very protective.

Glad it worked out and didn't bust your wallet open again. I have an S3 and use an Incipio case and love it. It's not too expensive and has absorbed at least 2 falls and kept the phone working flawlessly.
