Local Page Categories Appearing From Map Maker

    Hey all,

I hope everyone had a great weekend and is enjoying their week thus far! I just wanted to pop in and share some of our latest finds with categories on the new Google+ local pages. I haven't seen anyone discussing this so I apologize if this is old news.

As you know, through the new claiming process with Google+ Local, a user is only allowed to select one of the few pre-determined categories set by Google as shown below:

    Name: 1.png
Views: 195
Size: 42.3 KB

Anyways, our team has been receiving good luck in the last week getting 2 categories to appear on the Google+ local pages through the utilization of Map Maker. Once a listing is claimed, we will ensure the data in Map Maker is correct and add categories to the listing.

Right away, the Google+ local page will show the primary category selected during the claiming process via the Google+ platform (in our case, 'Professional Services'). However, after a couple of days we have seen 2 categories appear in it's place being pulled from Map Maker. Most of the time it looks like Google is:

    1. Pulling the primary category from Map Maker
    2. Selecting a secondary category from Map Maker (seemingly at random)

It is important to note that this only pertains to newly claimed listings via the updated route and not for already claimed listings within the Google Places dashboard.

Like I said, this could be old news but just thought I'd share anyways. It's nice to see even more transparency with the Local and Map Maker products.

Has anyone else experienced this? Please, feel free to share your thoughts!

Hope everyone's having a great week!

    Thanks,
    Matt

Hey Matt thanks for sharing and for always doing such great screen shots so we can see exactly what you are referring to.

"It is important to note that this only pertains to newly claimed listings via the updated route and not for already claimed listings within the Google Places dashboard."

So let me be sure I'm clear. Are you saying a client has no Google Place page whatsoever. You are starting from scratch and NOT setting up a Place page ONLY setting up a Google+ Business page with Local category set? OR are you saying they had a Place page and you merged it with the G+ Page? (IE verified the G+ page.)

    Hey Linda,

    Thanks! To answer your question:

"Are you saying a client has no Google Place page whatsoever. You are starting from scratch and NOT setting up a Place page ONLY setting up a Google+ Business page with Local category set? OR are you saying they had a Place page and you merged it with the G+ Page? (IE verified the G+ page.)"

Correct, this would be for a listing that is currently unclaimed and we are only setting up a Google+ Business page with a Local category set (By entering the phone number and then selecting the correct business listing Google provides). We then move forward with the claiming process from there.

This is not speaking to 'merging' pre-existing Place pages with G+ Pages.

    Does that make sense?

Hope this feedback was helpful, please let me know if you have any further questions and/or concerns!

    Thanks,
    Matt

Re: Local Page Categories Appearing From Map Maker

Matt, several of the Local Pros and I were just talking about this in the private forum.

None of us have done that yet - just set up a new client directly in G+ without setting up a G+L page 1st or having one already set up and then merging/verifying. In fact even back when I was working on client listing all my client's were claimed. It's been WAY over a year since I've had to set up a brand new listing, so just didn't tune into that part at all.

And since I'm not working on client sites any more, I don't have the opportunity for some of the hands on experience you guys have. So I have to live and learn vicariously through you guy's client experiences sometimes.

Re: Local Page Categories Appearing From Map Maker

    Hey Linda,

I would agree completely, and should've been more specific. Our team has an abundance of experience with the creation and setting up new accounts for clients on a daily basis so like you said, we're very much hands on in that arena. We spend an abundance of time maintaining them as well (you know, the fun part ).

We appreciate any beneficial insight we can provide to you and the community. Thanks again for providing this platform to do so!

    Thanks,
    Matt
