Where does the profile pic on the G+ Business Pages come from?

My client wanted to upload some photos to his G+ page so, instead of asking me, he just went ahead and uploaded them. To my surprise, they took up the 5 positions underneath the big cover image. I had believed that these were still controlled by the old Places page dashboard but not any more it would seem.

He also wanted to get rid of the profile image which was the picture he had originally uploaded to his Places page.

I tried deleting it from the Places dashboard but it still remained. I tried uploading another image to the Places dashboard but the old image still remained.

Today I clicked on the profile image itself and was taken through to this page

06-06-2013 21-17-22.jpg

And was surprised to see a Local red balloon which links through to this page https://plus.google.com/109925449492545080830/posts?hl=en called Local Photos with the date as April 2012 which may well have been when he originally uploaded the image.

Has anyone else come across this or have any idea how I can edit this image?

And should I be uploading images to the G+ page rather than the Places dashboard now?

Hey Jo,

I've never seen that local photos business page looking thing before. That's interesting.

First off, I feel your pain. I've had major issues with adding and deleting photos lately.

If you are dealing with a verified Local G+ page, I think the pics uploaded through the G+ interface will generally trump the pics that were uploaded from the places dash before the verification/merge was completed.

In regards to your last question...I would stick to using the G+ interface to make edits, add photos etc if it has already been verified. The places dash (if it's the old places dash) is more or less dead once the page has been upgraded.

Really important, Google has said numerous times, after you merge with G+ you are not supposed to edit at all in the Places dashboard.

I've been looking for help docs that will help you with this but I'm sorry, I just keep going in circles and some of the help docs I click even go to 404 error pages. There is a PDF that I thought would maybe help but it spins and spins and won't load. You'd think there would be an easy to find guide about images front and center in the help docs.

I guess my first question is how do you know if you have a verified G+ page?

I suspect that it is not, knowing the problems this client has been having with his address - his road does not exist on MapMaker because they put a roof on his shopping mall and I am now going to have to draw it in myself... they do realise that I am a woman who has to turn the map the right way round to follow it when I am navigating? :O

And we have not merged with Google+ - this is the page that Google created from our original Places dashboard.

I log into G+ as the client, then open a new window and search the name of his business. When his listing comes up, I access the G+ page for his business by clicking on his reviews.

When I click the Manage This Page button, it takes me through to the old Places dashboard - which is why I was so surprised that the images he uploaded to G+ appeared across the top of the page!

So I'm guessing we have not been properly merged or upgraded.

Here in the UK we seem to be trying to work with even less functionality than you guys have and no instruction manual :(

Wait, you have my brain totally twisted in knots now.

Post title was: Where does the profile pic on the G+ Business Pages come from?

My client wanted to upload some photos to his G+ page so, instead of asking me, he just went ahead and uploaded them. To my surprise, they took up the 5 positions underneath the big cover image. In 1st post you said he uploaded to G+ and you talked about trying to control the images both in G+ and Places dash so since title was about BUSINESS pages and you were talking about both, it totally sounded like we were talking about a merged page.

I guess my first question is how do you know if you have a verified G+ page?

I suspect that it is not...

And we have not merged with Google+ - this is the page that Google created from our original Places dashboard.

OK so now I'm officially confused. Now you say you didn't merge... and don't know what type of page it is?

It seems to me if he uploaded images to G+ and they are showing on the Place page, it must be a merged/verified G+ page?

Or maybe he explained it wrong to you. Maybe he made it sound that way BUT he just uploaded images as a user. If that was the case, that may be why you can't control them in either dash.

Also the way you are getting to dashboard is ill-advised and can cause problems. I call it going in the front door. Recommend always going in the back door and log in directly to that clients dash.

Here is Places log in link, bookmark, then use that clients log in and you'll always be in the right dash and not accidentally create a dupe like you can going in the front door.

Please share the link, even though I think you posted it in another post so I don't have to go digging. Let's start there and be sure what type of page.

LOL, you and me both Linda. Flipping Google - I have no idea what to call the pages any more :O

I don't normally go through that front door route - I remember your lesson well. I was trying to show that even when I try to manage the page that way, I still get sent back the old Places dashboard.

OK, let's start at the beginning. Here is the link to the G+ page which Google has generated for his business and which is accessed if people click on the 5 Reviews link in his listing
https://plus.google.com/115527095249205300283/about?hl=en

Client uploaded the images that you can see to this page. You can see where he has done this and if I click through when logged in as him, I can see a dustbin so assume have a way to delete as well. The newer one that he uploaded separately appears as the first image on the left.

As an aside, if I try to use the link you sent, it takes me through to his Google account. There is a dashboard option. If I click that, I get an option for G+ which is his profile and an option for Maps which says 'nothing interesting here'

In the left hand sidebar, there is an option for Products. If I click that I can see an option for Google Places. Click that? Back to the old Places dashboard.

I give up :(

PS Can you all give me the names and definitions of which pages are which as you understand them so I can avoid talking at cross purposes in future.

Limited on time. Prepping for important appt.

So just to address 1st part and main thing. That's just a Place page. It's not merged with a Google+ Business page. So it sounds like he just did image upload as a user onto the Place page. Nothing to do with Google Business Page.

May not get back to the rest of Qs til tonight or tomorrow.

No worries - I expect the issues will all still be here on Monday :) I hope your appointment goes well.

Can/Shall I change the title of the thread to Where does the profile pic on a Places page come from?

I do think there is a need for a sort of glossary - especially when many of us from different parts of the world are at different stages of the roll out.

Is there something about that page that allows you to see that it is just a Places page at a glance?

I am happy to start compiling such a thread with screenshots.

Sorry Jo, thought you knew the difference. The link below to a BIG post I did explaining it all was in your training. Part 1 training docs top of page 6. (Sorry I know there is an overload of info in there.)

Here it is: Crazy Google Local Page Name Conundrum - Clearing the Confusion

But in a nutshell if only reviews and only tabs on top are about and photos then it's just a Place page. The G_ business page would also have follow button, circles, videos tab and if merged/verified a check mark next to name.

A Business page only that's NOT not merged/verified has no reviews or write a review option, only has the social options and does not show up in search or maps.

Jo, I came across this yesterday. A Venn Diagram is a great way to show the differences and similarities among the different types of pages. What do you think?Does that help or make things as confusing as ever :p

Type A = G+ Local
Type B = G+ Business Page
Type C = Local G+ Page (which is the result of merging/verifying A and B OR doing the auto G+ upgrade IF you have the new Places Dashboard.)

---------- Post Merged at 05:44 PM ---------- Previous Post was at 05:42 PM ----------

Here's where I came across the diagram -

Oh now that's a pretty cool score Colan.

Could you add it to the Conundrum post too when you get a chance?

Awesome!

Yup, I totally missed both that thread and the part in your notes, Linda - I shall go in and reread tomorrow. So much information and so many changes all in one go :)

The Venn diagram really helps Colan! Thank you.

Still wondering how I can edit that image though - I guess that when we finally get merged, we may get the chance to change it.
